Whilst swimmers have been warned not to swim at a number of beaches in England and Scotland, including Clacton, Margate, East Looe, Ilfracombe and Burnham along with Cleveleys, north of Blackpool, Allonby and Silloth in Cumbria, and Spittal, Northumberland due to poor water quality, Wales has seen an increase in the number of beaches and marinas awarded Blue Flag status for high water quality and safety. It takes the total across Wales to 47, up from 41 last year.
The Blue Flag award is issued by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which rates beaches on categories including safety, facilities, and environmental management, as well as water quality and runs in 48 countries around the world.
The aim of the Green Coast Award is ‘To acknowledge those beaches which meet Guideline water quality (Guideline is the EU designation for excellent water quality) and are prized for their natural, unspoiled environment’.
Pembrokeshire’s beaches have been ranked amongst the best in the UK and across the world winning 55 Awards – 12 Blue Flag, 14 Green Coast (for more remote beaches) and 29 Seaside Awards.
Blue Flag beaches in Pembrokeshire include Amroth, Coppet Hall, Lydstep, Dale, Whitesands, Poppit Sands and Newgale whilst Barafundle Bay, Broadhaven South, Caerfai, Druidston Haven and Martins Haven are amongst our Green Coast Award winners.
