Those of us lucky enough to live in Pembrokeshire have always known we have some of the best beaches in the world. One, in particular, has won many awards such as being voted “Best Place to have a Picnic” by Conde Naste Traveller and by the organisers of National Picnic Week. It has also been listed as one of the World’s best beaches on numerous occasions by different organisations and magazines; the latest of which is by travel magazine, Passport.
Passport has revealed its ranking of the world’s top 25 beaches. Naturally, the white sands of Brazil, Australia, Hawaii, and New Zealand have all earned themselves a spot on the list. But a tiny bay in Wales has made headlines after overtaking some of the world’s most iconic stretches of coast to be named one of the very best.
Barafundle Bay in Pembrokeshire, has made it to the 17th spot on the list, beating the likes of Israel’s Tel Aviv, Brazil’s Ipanema, and the USA’s famous Herring Cove in the process.
Describing Barafundle, Passport says: ‘The long stretch of cliff known as Stackpole Head sticks straight into the sea like an arm. A little boulder sits jauntily offshore. The waves crash against the smooth sand. Your company here? Twelve people, four dogs and a visual overdose of beauty.’
Barafundle Bay is accessible only via a half mile walk from the nearest car park, and is backed by sand dunes and pine trees, adding to its magical feel.
Who needs a tropical island when you’ve got Pembrokeshire on your doorstep!
When asked why they put Barafundle Bay on the list, the judges had the perfect answer.
This beach is a revelation,” they said. “It’s a luxuriant curve of sand, topped by dunes and grasses on hills that make it feel immensely private…”
And Barafundle wasn’t the only British beach to be counted among the world’s best; Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire was another unexpected inclusion in Passport’s ranking.
