Once again, several of Pembrokeshire’s beaches feature in the list of the best beaches in the UK, along with a couple from Ceredigion. Pembrokeshire has numerous wonderful beaches; both Blue Flag and Green Flag so something to suit everyone. These range from the wild surfing beaches like Freshwater West, Whitesands and Newgale to sheltered bays like Barafundle, Freshwater East and Broadhaven South.
Skrinkle Haven, Pembrokeshire
Descend a long flight of steps to reach this sand and shingle beach dominated by a 50ft sea cave. The beach was off-limits until the 1980s because it was under an army firing range, now closed. Today it still feels largely unexplored. At the eastern end a rock tunnel leads to a little cove with two more caves.
Barafundle Bay, Pembrokeshire
This small but stunning bay, which is part of the National Trust-owned Stackpole Estate, often tops the best beach awards for its golden sands and clear waters, so it’s not exactly a secret, but it remains relatively quiet thanks to a half-mile walk to the nearest car park.
Watwick Bay, Pembrokeshire
Passing yachts often drop anchor for lunch at this idyllic, sheltered, sandy beach, which is only accessible on foot from the coast path. Children can spend hours looking for little creatures in the rock pools. The nearest café and pub are a mile along the coast path in Dale.
A tropical beach scene in the James Bond movie Die Another Day was filmed on this family-friendly stretch of unspoilt sand in Cardigan Bay, three miles east of Aberporth. The most scenic route from the car park (where there’s a café serving cream teas) is via a woodland path down Robber’s Valley, a nod to the area’s smuggling history.
If you’re lucky you might spot bottlenose dolphins, basking sharks and seals from the headland above this National Trust beach, a few miles north of Cardigan. Children will love playing in the stream that runs along the sand at the bottom of the 139 steps (not for the fainthearted).
